Obituary
Mrs. Mary E. Swindle, a resident of Wetumpka, Alabama transitioned this life
peacefully on December 3, 2023, (following a brief illness) at the age of 88. Mary
was born in Elmore County Alabama on September 18, 1935, to the late James L.
Gilbert and Jessie L. Austin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Goldberg
Swindle, her son Patrick Gilbert, grandson Joshua McKethern; two brothers:
Bobby Austin and Sherman Cunningham, three sisters: Dorothy Green, Jean
James and Jesselene Jackson. Mary “Big Mama” and “Nanny” as she was called
by her grandchildren, loved God and her Church family. She was the head cook at
Valleybrook Nursing Home for many years. Mary attended Elmore County
Training School. Her hobbies included cooking, fishing, and feeding her
hummingbirds. Mary is survived by her beloved children; five sons: Timothy
Gilbert, Kenneth (Diann) Gilbert, Vincent (Linda) Swindle, Stanley Swindle and
Phillip Swindle; four daughters: Wanda (Richard) Gilbert Steele, Vanessa Gill,
Valerie (Curtis) Cook and Vassie (Andrew) Foster; one special son Haywood
(Teresa) Robbins, her brother, McKinley (Lillie) Cunningham, three sisters: Linda
Cunningham, Carolyn Malloy, and Charlotte Austin; twenty-nine grandchildren,
forty-three great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and a host of other
relatives and friends. Three special friends: Mrs. Laverne Hollenquest, Mrs.
Ozella Mitchell and Mrs. Jackie Lacey.
